Natmeet 2024

Your Motorsport Chapter has continued its successes from 2023 with the Interclub Challenge, the joint MX5/BMW track sprint days and of course the Natmeet Track Day at Morgan Park.

We have also brought some innovations and revived other activities into the Chapter, including a car boot sale in August attended by 43 MX5 owners, many of whom were not members but a number have joined as a result of the day. We also had the joy of reconnecting with members many of us had not seen since the 90’s. We are keen to have another day before the end of the year while the momentum has been built up.

On Wednesday this week 25/9 a full DRIVER TRAINING DAY is being held at Lakeside Raceway, the morning at the Driver training centre and the afternoon on the main circuit. This day is not just about track sprinting, in fact no timing will occur – it is about upskilling members driving and relearning old skills. We are fortunate to have the help of one of our early members Greg McHugh who also works with Paul Stokell, as well as Cal Ballinger, Brian Ferrabee and yours truly who have had years of circuit racing experience.

I mentioned the Interclub Challenge, but how many Club members know what the challenge is? It is a separate Club made up of many car clubs in SEQ and each club has an opportunity throughout the year run an event and these events cover many disciplines – track sprints, regularity and consistency sprints, economy runs using public roads, motorkhanas, khana cross, a hill climb at the iconic Mt Cotton Hill Climb circuit owned and operated by the MG car Club, go-karting as well as the Mac’s Bridge day which was our club contribution for this year.

There is a points system which covers all the events and a complex set of results which can be affected by the number of entrants each club has entered, as the more members attending the better the chance of getting in the top four for the event. So this year after 8 rounds and with just two rounds to go your club is on top of the outright leaderboard, seven points clear of the Porsche Club. In the road registered category we are 4 points clear of the BMW Club. There is also the individual championship and our own Rob Mills is in second place plus we make up 8 out of the top 20 places.

We also have our own Club championship with trophies being awarded at the MX5 Club QLD Christmas Gala including Celebration of Champions at Victoria Park events Centre – more of that in another email advice.

These awards will cover all the results from the ICC rounds, the BMW Sprints and Natmeet with a complex coring system – our own Brownlow Medals if you like.

One other activity that I apologise that we have not promoted well enough this year but will do so in the New Year is the GEAR days which are a non-timed test and tune type day which enable all keen owners and drivers to test their cars and skills and a continuing basis so that come competition time we know that our cars and ourselves have had lots of practice to be able to better perform in competition.

Ah I nearly forgot, before the Christmas break we will also be having a technical day hosted by Whiteline/Fulcrum where you will be given all the help in tuning your cars suspension and handling.

Whilst the Sunday social run remains the most popular club activity there is so much more fun that can be had by combining the runs with our Motorsport activities.

Come and join in on the fun and see you soon.

Keep an eye out on the Club calendar for all the news.
